3 Villages Flood Group to deliver innovative and sustainable flood prevention measures

The 3 Village Flood Group is a volunteer led organisation formed by concerned residents of Mudford, Chilton Cantelo and Ashington.
The group has a shared goal which is to minimise the impact of flooding on the 3 villages and ensuring that each community is prepared to respond effectively.

Mudford is a village and parish in Somerset, England, situated 3 miles (4.8 km) from Yeovil in the South Somerset district on the River Yeo. The parish includes the hamlets of Mudford Sock, West Mudford and Up Mudford.  It is served by the church of St Mary The Virgin, which dates back to the 12th century and is a Grade I listed building.

Chilton Cantelo is a village and parish in Somerset, England, situated on the River Yeo the parish also includes the village of Ashington.

Ashington is a small village located in the county of Somerset, England is known for its beautiful countryside and historic buildings.

Current issues

• Drains need to be unblocked and ditches kept in good order, drains also need to be jetted and enlarged in some areas

• Improved hedge husbandry.

• Query raising of river  banks.

• Culverts need monitoring and cleared when necessary.

• Dry withy bed at the top of West Mudford Road no longer fit for purpose.

• Query advice to residents/landowners regarding the placement of attenuation ponds.

• Minimal flow of the river Yeo through one of the arches of the bridge over the A 359 due to silt build up and is currently blocked.
This can lead to the river bursting its banks and flooding the main A 359.

• There are concerns about the proposed planning at the top of Primrose Lane causing flooding further down in the village.

• The issue of anthrax present in the soil has not been disproved.

• At the present time there is no vehicle to have a cohesive dialogue with all landowners.

What help do we need

• Open meaningful dialogue with all local landowners regarding sustainable methods to prevent flooding.

• Review historical evidence of sustainable flood prevention methods.

• Help with flood protection for individual properties

• Discussions with Highways Authority about flooded roadway management.  Potential to further develop the trial from Poddimore in closing roads in the event of serious rainfall.  This will enable the 3 Village Flood Group to put up signage to close roads.

• Encourage a further role out of 3vfg adopt a drain scheme.

• Discuss with residents/landowners regarding the placement of attenuation ponds.

• Ideas to slow run off from fields to prevent the meeting of pluvial and fluvial waters.

• With the proposed  housing development at the top of Primrose Lane we would request advice regarding the current decision to rescind the planting of trees.
